Ovulation induction
What is Ovulation induction?
Ovulation induction is a medical infertility therapy in which the ovaries are stimulated with various fertility drugs in order to initiate ovulation (egg production and release), or to augment ovulation.Ovulation induction is used when a pre-menopausal woman is wanting to become pregnant and is not ovulating for some reason.
It involves using medication for five days a month to stimulate the ovaries to release an egg. The important thing that you need to establish is whether you have gone through the menopause or not. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years and is said to have begun when a woman has not had a period for a year. Blood tests can confirm that a woman has gone through the menopause and an FSH level greater than 30IU/L is usually taken as being post menopausal. However to be sure that this is the case it would be necessary to know the LH and oestrogen levels.
The menopause occurs when the ovaries are no longer able to release an egg each month. The number of eggs is greatest when a female baby is in the womb and the number falls steadily until the store of eggs is exhausted. Once a woman has gone through the menopause no eggs remain, and thus ovulation induction would not be helpful.
